The site called Sunrise Ridge is located 4.5 miles south of the 4-way stop in the heart of the town of Vashon, and 2 miles north of the town of Burton. It is only a 20 minute drive from the farthest points of both Vashon and Maury Islands.
Sunrise Ridge is home to the Vashon Health Center, Highline Medical Enterprises non-profit medical group, Granny's Attic Thrift Shops, operated by the Health Center Volunteers, the Vashon-Maury Food Bank, and youth baseball fields.
Sunrise Ridge was formerly a US Army NIKE missile site. Private property had been condemned to place NIKE missiles for the protection of Seattle from foreign attack. The Army Corps of Engineers built barracks, a mess hall, administration buildings, a guard tower and family housing as well as the underground launch pads.
The entire property became surplus just at the time the Health Center needed more space for the medical clinic. Neither the State nor County wanted the property, so 13 acres, including 6 buildings, were given to the Vashon-Maury Health Services Center Board (VMHSC) of Directors with the provision that it would be used for 30 years for non-profit education and welfare uses. That time is up in September 2006. In addition, Granny's Attic purchased property along the highway, bringing the total property to about 17 acres.
The VMHSC Board has always considered Sunrise Ridge to be for the use of the entire community. In the next 4 years, we must plan for the use of this property. Besides the Health Center and other present uses, the community will be asked what other needs are compatible and possible for Sunrise Ridge.
This centrally located property, with a tremendous view in all directions, is a jewel that should be enhanced and cherished by all Islanders. Your suggestions and ideas, as well as your support, will be welcome.
